I am lactose intolerant. It's a fact of life, and I have to learn to live with it. My entire life, up until a year ago, I ignored this fact. And because I was ignoring it, I never realized how sick it was making me. When I cut it out of my diet completely, it was like a brand new day! I didn't realize I could feel so good! Cutting out dairy isn't very easy. In fact, it's one of the hardest things I've ever done. I am a fan of anything milky. Ice cream, cheese, yogurt, cheese, sour cream, cheese, chocolate, and cheese. Getting rid of these things was essential though, for my health.
The "rules" we have in church are kind of like my situation with milk. We have them in place as a guideline for things we should avoid, because they don't allow you to feel the spirit, or feel "good". They are extremely enticing for a lot of different people. Some more than others. One person might really like a drink every now and then, while someone else really likes their afternoon cigarette. BUT, these things prohibit us from reaching our full potential. We are weighed down by the things that cause damage to our bodies. When you are busy taking part in unhealthy things, the Holy Ghost can NOT be with you.
No matter how good those things sound or look, remember that there is a reason we avoid them. The presence of the Holy Ghost is worth much more than a drag, trip, or stupor. And way more than a hangover. I know how hard it is, I LOVE cheese. I miss it so much! But in my body it does more damage than good. Therefore I avoid it so that my performance in my work can be at its best.
If you would like to know more about the things we as Latter-Day Saints stay away from visit : http://mormon.org/commandments/#obey-the-word-of-wisdom
Stay away from YOUR cheese.

The Killers ---> Reminding us what's important
One of the coolest things that I've discovered on my mission, is the fact that the lead singer in the band "The Killers," Brandon Flowers, is a Latter-Day Saint. I've listened to their songs and I am proud to say that I own quite a few of them on my Ipod and laptop back home.
What's funny about it is, that while listening to their songs before, I have had the thought run through my head, "this is written by a Mormon." But then followed the "Naaaahh- Mormons don't write good, catchy songs for the radio." Yes, I am a mean person, I know that. Can you blame me though? The songs meant something, but they were far too good, in my opinion, to have been written by an LDS. So you can imagine the absolute shock I felt when I discovered at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, that these fantastic songs really were written by a Mormon!!! It was like running into a brick wall! I should know, I've done that before. Chastised once more, I shall never underestimate the creative ability of a Mormon again.
Truth be told, I idolize anyone who can hold true to their standards while in the limelight. He does exactly that. I love the value he puts in his family. His success has come from knowing exactly who he is, and what is important to him. The fact that he has "made it" in the business, doesn't take precedence over his family. We should all strive to put as much effort into our home and family life as he does. On top of it all, he writes good songs that, like I've said before, mean something. Rather than the filthy stuff you usually catch on the radio.

Like a BOSS!!! <---- I'm so cool
Lady bugs are an amazing insect. Not only are they cute and adorable, but they are also vicious! But they don't look it. Kind of like me, haha!
Lady bugs are loved by all gardeners. Mainly because they keep their plants from being infested with aphids. Which are evil little bugs that ruin food or decorative plants. Along with other pests. So basically, the Lady bug is the bug BOSS. They are straight up G's in the insect neighborhood!
Like a Lady bug, we have to identify the things that eat away at our progression, and devour them so they don't anymore! Maybe it's the clothing you decide to wear (if people can't focus on your eyes when you're talking, something needs to change), or a phrase that you say, or even music that you listen to. Any one of those little things can appear harmless, but before you know it, they've grown into an infestation. All of a sudden you find yourself becoming someone you don't want to be. And it all started with one little thing. Like an aphid!
We have to be our own Lady bugs in life. With the help from our scriptures and church we can learn how to battle and take down the things that seem harmless, but can take over our lives. Bust a cap in those aphids! Don't let the little things creep in, take them out of your life before you lose control! Make sure YOU are the boss of you! Be a Lady bug. LIKE. A. BOSS.

My Ego is Non-Existent Now
I never realized how big of an idiot I could be, or am, until I came out on my mission. There have been times when I have been reminded how much I don't know. You'd think that as a missionary, you'll always know exactly what to say... I'm telling you now, it's NOT true!
Just recently, my companion and I met a man who knows the Book of Mormon is true, but has never been baptized. Sister Powell asked him what it was that he liked about the Mormon religion, and he said he liked the teachings and the principles. This is where I come in and ask him the same exact question, but in different words... He gave me that look of, "Idiot, I just answered that question" and repeated his previous answer. Needless to say, I was completely embarrassed. I'm glad it was dark outside because I turned redder than a baboon's butt.
That's just one instance. I have multiple other ones when I suddenly have to speak Spanish. There was one time when I kept repeating over and over again that Thomas S. Monson is our prophet here today... Apparently the lady really needed to hear it cuz nothing else was coming to my head!
The point is, none of us is perfect. Especially missionaries. Don't be surprised if one says or does something stupid, we're learning one stupid mistake at a time. To tell you the truth, I'm really tempted to make myself a DUNCE cap to wear on a daily basis. That way, people will be a little more sympathetic.
